Having spent most of his working life looking for precious water resources across the higher Himalayas, Indian Guinness record holder Ritesh Arya is preparing to explode what he believes are “unnecessary” myths about global warming. Dr Arya, who was also recently listed amongst the top 10 small-scale renewable energy

innovators at the World Renewable Energy Summit at Dubai for his work on geothermal energy in the Himalayas, has been invited to develop his findings on global warming as a research paper for presentation at the Global Conference on Global Warming 2011 at Lisbon Spain later this year.
He holds the Guinness Record for drilling the world’s highest tubewell for the Indian Army at Siachen in 2001. Entitled, “C-Curves & Global Warming”, the young scientist will use field geological data (palaeoclimatic signatures available in rock formations) collected in the Ladakh Region to demonstrate that “global warming is a natural process and man and his activities have no role in enhancing or reducing the cyclic process.”
He employs qualitative and quantitative distinctions in the deposition of sediments (now solidified as rock) to demonstrate the cyclical warming and cooling phases that the earth seems to have undergone over time. “We are currently in a global warming era and the process of this warming began around the last ice age that is believed to have ended around 10,000 years ago,” said Mr Arya.

A Chandigarh-based scientist, who holds the Guinness Record for successfully drilling the highest tube well in the world at Siachen, has been appointed Indian coordinator to head a tri-nation — Norway, Iceland, India — initiative aimed at evolving new green technologies based on geothermal energy resources in the Himalayas.

Dr Ritesh Arya, who runs India’s most successful high-altitude drilling operation for water, will head the multi-million dollar INDNOR joint scientific project in partnership with Kirsti Midttømme of the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute. Participants include NGI, Institute for Energy Technology (Norway), Iceland Geosurvey, the National Institute of Technology Hamirpur, Chandigarh’s Centre of Advanced Study in Geology, the Satluj Jal Vidyut Yojana.
Arya Drillers, the scientist’s own Himalayan company, Stratoil and GreenEnergy will represent the corporate end of the initiative which will innovate sustainable green technologies to develop geothermal sources as a supply of renewable energy across the north-western Himalayas.
According to Dr Arya, “The Indian Himalayas are promising area for geothermal utilization containing geothermal spring areas and high heat flow provinces. Development of the geothermal resources has the potential to supply the region with electric power, heat and cold which may increase industrial efficiency and productivity in sectors such as agriculture, food processing and tourism.” Collaboration with Norway and Iceland, where geothermal technologies are already at a fairly advanced stage could help in opening access to a completely unexploited, but green and endlessly renewable energy source without disturbing the delicate Himalayan ecology.
The INDNOR project also envisages gradually building a qualified human resource base locally to sustain and enlarge capacities in the geothermal sector.

Present paper is based on the data gathered for over a decade from the borewell samples drilled in the paleo-glacio-fluvial deposits of the Indus basin in Ladakh, Indian Himalayan region. Borewell samples analysed from the wells drilled clearly show that global warming and cooling processes are like day and night though with longer durations. They are essential part of the global climate natural cycle which act in uniform to continuously change the various landforms on this mother earth and make it geomorphologicaly so beautiful. Holding man and his activities responsible for pollution is acceptable truth but holding him responsible for global warming is an Inconvenient Truth, because man is too small to cause any changes of global scale on sustainable basis. This Paper emphasise the use of proper technology to improve exploration, production and decrease pollution on one hand and recommends use of renewable energy resources so that pure air can be made available to all. It also emphasises the need to re-examine the global warming definition as proposed by IPCC which holds man and his activities responsible for increased global warming in recent years. Experiments carried by the author while drilling wells in the Indus Basin clearly show that major glaciers including the Indus Glacier which extended from Mansarovar in Tibet to Arabian sea melted much before the advent of Industrialisation and rates of receding of glaciers though unknown in those times were much faster then are being projected and related to the activities of man today. Global warming has to be viewed in a different perspective where it has to be related to the influx of increased water in the natural system so that sediments deposited during global cooling times can be transported to rivers and oceans. Act which is somewhat similar to the way scavengers behave here global warming is cleaning the earth of the debris and is responsible for transporting them in the oceans. Glacial retreat, cyclones, tsunamis, flash floods, sea level rise, land submergence are prominent and natural agencies responsible for the various processes of global warming. They help her to transport the deposited material into the rivers/oceans. In this context man with his modern excavating machinery can also be called one of his agencies because he is also digging and at times transporting the sediment deposits. Time has come to put things about global warming, straight, before it is too late. Associating global warming to activities of man as proposed by IPCC and holding his actions responsible for directly or indirectly contributing to increased green house gases, leading to enhanced temperatures, or faster melting rates of glaciers will only make things worse because the definition and approach tries to establish a mathematical relationship between man and his environment but completely fails to explain the process in totality. Hence this confused scenario where we have become our own enemies and it seems we are fighting a lost battle. But the reality is totally different and man is too small to cause any impact on global warming. With little precaution while selecting the site for habitation near the coasts or glacio-fluvial valleys impacts of global warming like cyclones, flash flooding, land submergence etc can be minimised. Today technicians (chemists, physics, biologists, and radiologist) have become doctors of mother earth, whereas geologists who are real doctors of mother earth are less listened to by the politicians / business houses for reasons best known to them. So called green house gases are essential for our survival now and increased population in future but today these gases are treated as if they are threatening our very existence by enhancing the global warming processes. Global cooling will lead to our extinction. Imagine living in Antarctica or Greenland for the rest of the life without water, without cyclones, without floods. So it’s high time, we learn to ”Enjoy global warming” otherwise what are we going to do in global cooling times.

CHANDIGARH: Known for its sylvan surroundings and home to many writers, the quiet calm of Kasauli is broken by an odd assortment of sounds these days. A relic of the British era, the hill station is witnessing hectic activity from a clutch of visitors who've come here following the findings of latest geological survey. With expectations of potential oil reserves in the region, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has started acquiring land for drilling. "We have encouraging leads," M K Verma, director, ONGC, and head of north India operations, told TOI on Wednesday. "We plan to begin drilling in Kasauli and subsequently shift operations to Nahan and Kangra." Based on evidence from geologists and seismic activity and imaging, ONGC has earmarked Rs 50-100 crore for the project. Buoyed by the findings, the Himachal Pradesh government, too, is considering framing a policy to tap the natural resources. In fact, the first week of January saw the chief minister's office turning into a policy presentation hub. "There is a need for new approach, to learn lessons from past failures and move on with fresh vigour. Perhaps, use of better drilling and exploration technology would help," added Ritesh Arya, a prominent geologist and member of the CM's team tasked with the job of framing a policy on oil and natural gas use. "The state has rich (oil and gas) reserves which have not been exploited. There are indications of presence of rich geothermal energy in Kangra, Jawalamukhi, Kasauli and Nahan." About the past drilling experiences, which brought in low yields, Verma claimed, "The idea is to keep eliminating possibilities. Owing to the landscape, imaging is not very clear and problems persist. But every drilling experience has contributed to the intelligence available." In 2000, ONGC had started drilling in Dhaban, a sleepy hamlet in Balh valley of Mandi district. The oil deposits, expected some 5050 m below the earth surface, were never found and the operation was called off after four years. There are several oil wells, abandoned after years of explorations, in Jawalamukhi area.

Tomorrow there is drive in Leh where plantation of 1 million trees is being done. On asking why plantation they had an answer that wherever there is plantation there were less floods. I was surprised because I had seen the hype of uprooted trees in front of Choglamsar village. And stories from the villagers who said that the uprooted trees had blocked the channel of the stream which either changed the course of the river stream or made a blockade which accumulated debris and again broke creating maximum damage to the habitations living downstream. In case of eventuality as happened on 1st week of August 2010 these trees were maximum to be uprooted and seeing the hype of trees in front of Choglamsar SBI bank one would be left with no doubt about their use in terms of controlling the floods or events of the magnitude which happened on 6 August 2010.
Similar observations were made by me after the devastation of the green forest cover along the Phyang nala adjacent the Ladakh scouts regiment. It was unimaginable scenario to see 1000s of uprooted trees and it was the same nala which was susceptable to flooding last year also. This year 20 -25 labors of contractor , many army men and 3 guards on duty were lost. Bodies of those on duty have not been recovered and are suspected to be taken to Indus from the strong flow of the stream. The intensity of the flooding event was unimaginable and since it happened in night it was a nightmare for all those who are saved.
With more then 50000 trees lost as per the figures given by the Taru villagers on the fatal night of 5Aug and early hours of 6Aug 2010 the destruction and the geographic distribution of the lands and stream has changed dramatically after almost a month people find it difficult to still imagine where their farms have gone and their and holdings have been squeezed to almost negligible amount. Thier basic foundations of basic living has been washed on that day.
Basic foundation was based on grabing the land and in this case it happened to be the stream beds or the paleo glacial deposits.

Millions of trees were actually lost on the fatal day of 6th August 2010 because there was inherihant problem in plantation in geologically fragile enironment and that has really made the efforts of years to just ground where people have started cursing the stream and the rains for their eventuality.
whereas in real sense the stream just followed its own course and is 100 % related to global warming phenomenon. Nature follows its course and man commits the same age old mistake of commiting the disaster of bocking the paths of nature.

The effort of plantation drive is welcome and is good step but how and which plants and location still holds the key for sustianble plantation,if geologically fragile locations are chosen then they will also meet the same fate.
Moreover linking this plantation drive to protecting floods will be a great mistake as there is absolutely no relationship at all.
Contaray to this systematic plantation will help us in making the area green and brining more fresh oxygen.
Definalety we require sustaianble geological locations for making habitations sustainable. Manay walls and stupas build with geologicall wisdom is an answer to protect from floods and Gompas and palace ideal for locating places for sustaianble habitations.

Leh Foods......Anomaly Spituk Agling Pang and Tyagshi Village

Amidst the stories of destruction due to heavy rains in Leh during 1st week of August 2010 as per general observation in Leh Ladakh and surrounding areas all the affected areas were on the south facing side or leeward side. Contrary to this there were two exceptions village Spituk Agling Pang and Tyagshi. Spituk Agling Pang is south facing side and is the the most distal village in Leh catchment. It was affected due to floods but they were not related to heavy rains but were related to floods caused due to unprecedented rise in river Indus water. Second village Tyagshi on the banks of Shyok river and is north facing. And if I have to rate locations on the basis of the destruction caused then Tyagshi holds number 1 position with maximum thickness of about 20-25 feet deposited in minimum amount of time.Though no civil men were lost but army lost a unit and some of the bodies were recovered from Pakistan site in Skardu area. Bodies were recovered from sleeping bags and no body had time to exactly know what has actually happened. Similarly the other anomaly to the flooding event was the village Spituk Agling Pang which has a habitation of about 26 families. Located on the proximity to banks of river Indus. This village was facing the most aftermath of destruction due to centuries and have been pleading with the administration for providing sustainable habitats to thier future generation was saved from fear of living in floods year after year.In recent times 2006 was the year when the entire village took shelter in some other place because the floods form Leh had destroyed their entire habitation and they were promised safe place in Igo Phey area but as the time passed everything was forgotten and this village had no option but to go back to its own old location and wait for the event which would ultimately claim thier lives. Geologically the river Indus represents culmination of suturing between India and China some 60 million years ago and is geologically known as the Indus Tsanpo suture zone. Seismically this is one of the highest in world and this village is just 20 meters or may be on the zone . Unknown about this danger this village is today camping near the truck union campus and waiting for someone to hear their plight as the administration is busy rehabilitating the affected people in Choglamsar and Leh. Because if we go by categorisation then this was not due to rains but they were affected due to flooding due to unprecedented rise in river Indus which shook their entire foundations besides breaking many houses. Living on the edge this village is in a dilemma because they fear no one is going to take their care. As everyone was forgetting thier plight.
Will the administration wake up before they meet the same fate as the natives of Tyaghsi on the banks of Shoyk river who were buried instantly under the debris within seconds. Becuase geographically both are located on the most distal part of thier catchments and are lying on suture zone.

Leh 6 Aug 2010 an extreme geological event::Dr Ritesh Arya

I had recorded the events from 12.45 am on 6th Aug 2010

and would like to share the chronology of events

After the flood I we did some investigations and found that it was not a cloud burst but an extreme geological event which was triggered by heavy rains on 6th Aug 2010.

All evidences clearly show that the flooding events in Leh were very selective in their occurrence and impact.Skampari region and Housing colony were least effected even though they were lying in the same catchment of Sabu,Shakshi lingpo stream and old ammunition stream above the housing board colony.The selective destruction and no evidence of cloud burst at the top of these catchments clearly support the theory proposed by Dr Ritesh Arya according to which land slides years ago occured and blocked the main channel leading to reservoir formation and these reservoirs when not able to hold water due to excessive rains and the walls ruptured on 6th Aug 2010 causing flooding.

The flooding event was definitely an extreme geological event because thick deposit of 3 to 23 feet debris were deposited in fraction of minutes on that day changing the entire geomorphology of the region.

By 12.30 am or 10-15 minutes earlier then that on 6th August 2010 everything was over and landscape of the region was totally changed.The effected areas were raised by 3-22 feet at different places within a short span of 3-7 minutes. This rapid sedimentation was enough to create a mud slush which was good to trap the lives which unknowing fell into it.maximum loss was in Choglamsar where people were just sinking in this slush. Eyewitness say they saved 2-3 people but could have saved more had they got ropes.It was dark and who ever ventured out of his house to escape the floods in that mud never returned,he just sank. dead bodies excavated in the morning were found in standing condition with hand almost in upward position clearly showing that the man in question had done whatever he could do to get out of that slush but the thickness prevented him from coming out and he just sank in the mud finally got covered with it.

Studies conducted by author clearly show that this was just a trailer and the real event is yet to come and that would be the great leveliser. We found evidences of major flooding events which have happened in the past. Their intensity and magnitude was much greater then that of 6th Aug 2010 but those events were forgotten because no life was lost as population was less and all the population was confined in geologically stable places guarded by Mani wall and Stupas which were indicators and boundaries defining the safe zones and protecting habitation from any natural disasters. Mud houses in old geologically stable locations were saved and concrete buildings on channels was destroyed.

People lost everything which was not part of the stable geological foundation. Whatever happened on that day was natural but the destruction to human life and property was due to action and activities of man in unstable geological formations. Mainly paleo glacio fluvial channels. In Leh, Bus Stop, BSNL exchange,radio station and Hospital were all located on Shakshilingpo channel whereas in Choglamsar the stream changed its course.

Floods in Leh : An extreme geological event

Calling Leh floods merely floods caused due to cloud burst will be not doing justice to the main phenomenon which actually changed the entire scenario of Leh town as we saw on that day of 6th Aug 2010....

It was an extreme geological event triggered by heavy rains.

Floods are generally thought and believed to be like an event which happened in parts of Delhi on the banks of Yamuna

Water comes and goes and nothing much happens....

but in Leh on 6th August 2010 it was different ....

it was not merely a normal flood ......it was much more then a normal flood

it was not only water but thick slush of mud which actually was the source of all problems

slush of mud also brought with it huge boulders the size of which at times was more then 1.5 meters.

Slush of mud moved in such a fashion that the strength was unimaginable

It might have moved with the velocity of more then 150 to 160 Kms per hour and the thick paste and slush of mud was more then 6 to 10 feet in thickness in Choglamsar and more then 20 feet in Tyagshi

People were dying not because of anything but they were sinking in the mud slush and those who dared to challenge the strength of the floods were crushed to death.

The proximal parts of the effected catchments were dominant by movement of huge boulders whereas the distal parts were dominated by mud mud and thick paste of mud.

Nature and Natural Process followed their natural course,devastation was more due to man made activities on the natural course of the rivers and streams. Process on 6th Aug was natural but devastation was man made.

I felt bad when I read the editorial 'The pundit - Hanging by a coat'on 3 Feb 2010 in which Hindustan Times is passing judgment and giving clean chit to PACHUARI for doing a good job but he will emerge as the biggest manipulator of global warming who like many others have really no knowledge about what they had been propagating about the global warming phenomenon

All his concepts from melting glaciers in Himalayas by 2035 to linking thier enhanced melting to pollution and GHGs specifically projecting CO2 relationship to global warming and above all attributing the increase to man and his activities speak volumes of errors and mistakes this man has committed in actually projecting the concept of man made global warming

But in reality the things are quiet different.

There is absolutely no relationship between man and his activities with global warming and pollution and GHGs can be improved using better technologies. But these GHGs including CO2 has no relationship in affecting the global warming processes.

The whole idea on which IPCC and Pachuri along with gore were awarded Nobel Prizes is all manipulation away from truth.

Yes we all need better technologies and alternate source of renewable energies but I am sorry to say these have nothing to do with global warming.

Global warming Pollution Better technologies and renewable energy is mixed by IPCC under Pachuaris chair in such a foolproof manner that whenever the person wants to know the truth about global warming he ends up with so much confusion and interlinks that he feels IPCC is right and Pachauri is really doing good because he he lighting millions of houses by TERI

TERI is just a mask to cover his manipulated deeds. Arya, who earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for striking ground water and drilling the highest borewell in the world in Ladakh, wants numerous geothermal springs to be developed into tourist destinations by developing spa resorts, health centres based on traditional therapies along with other required infrastructural facilities. “Hot springs have been, since time immemorial, used by the local residents and which also attracted a large number people because of their medicinal properties, lack even the basic amenities. While the government has been indifferent to the development of these sites, private players have not been able to exploit these sources to its potential,” he lamented. More importantly, each of these places like Manikaran, Tatapani and Vashist (Himachal) and Chumathang, Panamic, Puga Sasoma, Marsmicla and Demchuk (Ladakh), had a history and also acquired religious sanctity which could be exploited to attract tourists. By setting up of recreational facilities like swimming pools, spas and good hotels and using the green non-polluting geothermal energy, the state could take lead in promoting low-carbon footprint tourism, he pointed out. Arya maintains that geothermal resource development holds the key to sustainable development of tourism and power in the region where ever they are found. In fact, states like Himachal could set up geothermal study centre for carrying out research and development to promote geo-tourism. He has already carried much work on these sites and will present his plan at the World Geothermal Congress-2010 to be held at Bali in Indonesia from April 25 to 29 in a paper entitled “Geothermal Sites as Tourists Destination in Indian Himalayas”. He has, in the paper, highlighted the importance of developing geothermal sites and has asserted that advanced countries, which had acquired expertise in the field, should provide technical and other required support to the developing countries where the geothermal resource planning and development was still in its infancy. After all, benefits of geothermal and rock energy had to be shared by all irrespective of the place, he added. Clean rock energy should be made available to all at a very low price, he said. Investment opportunities to develop geothermal sources are many but because of lack of initiatives by the successive government and policy makers, geothermal resource is a badly neglected resource, he added.

Geologist vow teamwork after fresh claim

Chandigarh: Fresh claims have been made by a local geologist of international repute that he discovered the 20 million old fossil tree found at Kasauli, which has now been preserved as a open-air museum site as part of the first geo-heritage outreach programme of Chandigarh Museum.

Earlier, UT museum director NS Randhawa had claimed discovery of the fossil tree along with AD Ahluwalia, heading the PU Geology department and PC Sharma from the Chandigarh Museum. However, eminent geologist Ritesh Arya, who entered the Guinness Book of World Record for discovering water at highest altitude in the world, has challenged the discovery claiming that he discovered the tree in 1989 and the discovery is part of his PhD thesis submitted in 1997.

However, the scientist have now decided to work together to preserve the site. Speaking to TOI AD Ahluwalia said “It has been verified that Ritesh did document the fossil in his thesis about which we were ignorant. It was never published and so had escaped notice. But now we have decided to work as a team and give credit to Ritesh as expert geologist who discovered it.”

Reacting to the efforts of tPublish Posthe Chandigarh Museum to preserve and conserve the fossilized tree which he researched on over 15 years ago, Ritesh Arya said “It is unique effort of the museum to conserve this invaluable piece of history. Identification of the tree, as to which tree it is, is not possible because of silicification (process where original organic matter is replaced by silica) destroys the internal structure hence identification is not possible) and the actual age of the tree is 20 million years.”

The tree trunk, said Arya, would have been destroyed had he not stopped some construction workers from removing it about a decade ago. Similarly, it was the initiative of NPS Randhawa who also prevented the tree from getting damaged by construction workers a year ago when he noticed it without ever having seen any fossil wood.

The fossil is on the private property of an individual, HL Hkuslani, who has been declared as citizen scientist, as an initiative to encourage citizens to help in preserving and conserving invaluable relics. PC Sharma of UT Museum, who is also a part of the discovering team said, “Our thrust is on preservation and conservation as we wish that these relics are protected and the masses educated about their importance.

While NPS Randhawa, now gets to keep his credit as an amateur geologist, a team of like minded people has been formed to work towards getting Kasauli recognized as national park for its various fossil wood and plant locations.

‘Global warming is natural, enjoy it’ Declares Indian Geologist

‘Global cooling will lead to our extinction’

Award-winning Indian Geologist Dr. Ritesh Arya, who specializes in hydrogeology and groundwater resources in the Himalayas, declared, “Global warming is natural, enjoy it” and asserted that “man is too small to cause any impact on global warming.” Arya, who has authored several research papers and was invited by the Royal Geographical Society in 2005 to discuss climate change, warned that “global cooling will lead to our extinction.”

Arya will be discussing his new scientific paper which has been accepted for presentation at the July 5-9 2009 Global Conference on Global Warming in Istanbul, Turkey. Ayra was the recipient of the Great Indian Achievers Award 2004 and the Bharat Excellence Award 2003.

“Holding man and his activities responsible for pollution is truth, but holding him responsible for global warming is an “Inconvenient Truth” because man is too small to cause any changes of global scale on a sustainable basis,” Arya said on January 5, 2008. Arya says his new paper “emphasises the need to re-examine the global warming definition as proposed by UN IPCC which holds man and his activities responsible for increased global warming in recent years. Experiments carried by the author while drilling wells in the Indus Basin clearly show that major glaciers, including the Indus Glacier which extended from Mansarovar in Tibet to the Arabian Sea, melted much before the advent of industrialisation and the rates of receding of glaciers, though unknown in those times, were much faster then are being projected and related to the activities of man today.”

“The time has come to put things about global warming straight, before it is too late. Associating global warming to the activities of man as proposed by UN IPCC and holding mankind’s actions responsible for directly or indirectly contributing to increased greenhouse gases, leading to enhanced temperatures or faster melting rates of glaciers, will only make things worse because the definition and approach tries to establish a mathematical relationship between man and his environment but completely fails to explain the process in totality. Hence this confused scenario where we have become our own enemies and it seems we are fighting a lost battle. But the reality is totally different and man is too small to cause any impact on global warming,” Arya explained.

“So-called greenhouse gases are essential for our survival now and increased population in the future, but today these gases are treated as if they are threatening our very existence by enhancing the global warming processes. Global cooling will lead to our extinction. Imagine living in Antarctica or Greenland for the rest of the life without water, without cyclones, without floods. So it’s high time we learn to enjoy global warming,” Arya said.

Arya says his paper “is based on the data gathered for over a decade from the borewell samples drilled in the paleo-glacio-fluvial deposits of the Indus basin in Ladakh, Indian Himalayan region. Borewell samples analysed from the wells drilled clearly show that global warming and cooling processes are like day and night though with longer durations. They are an essential part of the global climate natural cycle which acts in uniform to continuously change the various landforms on this mother earth and make it geomorphologicaly so beautiful.”

The fact was that the ‘biotic’ agents (man and other living organisms) had a very small role compared to the ‘abiotic’ (geological, geomorphologic, climatologic, planetary and hydrological) events like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, movement of glaciers and landslides,” Arya told The Tribune on February 18, 2008. According to the article, Arya termed “the hype and panic over ‘global warming’ as ‘unnecessary.’” “There is a hype of global warming created by western mass media and there is a need to redefine the whole concept,” Arya said on June 14, 2008.
